Rent Clarified

About Rent Clarified

A free, plain-English tool that helps renters understand whether a rent increase is fair, high, or possibly not allowed.

Why we exist

Most renters never read their state's rent statutes. They get an increase letter, panic, and search the internet. The results are usually long, confusing, and full of legalese. Rent Clarified is the opposite: a 10-second tool that gives you a clear estimate and links to the official source so you can verify everything yourself.

Who's behind this

Rent Clarified is operated by Rent Clarified. Our editorial team researches each state's rent statute directly from official government sources and reviews every state page at least once per quarter. We are renters and former renters — not lawyers — and we never present our work as legal advice. See our Disclaimer and Methodology.

Editorial standards

  • Primary sources first. Every state page links to the underlying statute or regulation.
  • Dated reviews. Every state page shows when it was last reviewed.
  • Public corrections. We log substantive corrections at /legal/corrections.
  • No paid placements. We do not accept payment to alter information about any state, city, or landlord.
  • No legal advice. Our output is educational. For your situation, consult a licensed attorney or local tenant-rights org.

How we make money

Today we don't. The tool and content are free. If we add affiliate links or sponsorships in the future, they will be clearly disclosed on the affected pages, in compliance with the FTC's Endorsement Guides (16 C.F.R. Part 255).
